Thinking of buying Patek Philippe 5159
« on: January 09, 2013, 08:08:56 PM »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone knows how much PP 5159 costs in Malaysia/Singapore. Thinking of using children's education fund to purchase one if possible. How much discount do AD give for PP? I have not purchased any watch for more than 15 years, so I am really out of touch. Hope someone can assist.. Thanks.

The US list price for the 5159 is about $99k for WG and RG and $96k for YG. IIRC, there is one at the Suria KLCC boutique.

I don't think I want to question why you would want to sacrifice your children's education fund for it. Do as you please with your money. I would go for the WG model.

note: corrected YG price

Thanks Dpkong! Do Malaysian AD follow the US price list or there's a Malaysian price list? The price I was quoted by one AD was 10% above US list.. Maybe they didn't use current exchange rate..

So if you already got quoted a price then why are you still asking for the price?

Odd.. the prices I was quoted for the models I inquired about were very close to the 2012 US list price. Maybe you're asking in Singapore where everything is more expensive due to the stronger SGD in the last couple of months.

As I said earlier, i would like to know whether there's a separate price list for Malaysia, or they just follow the US price list, and use their own currency conversion rate. And whether the discount given is 'standard' throughout all the AD in Malaysia and Singapore.

Thanks for the reply. That could be the case since i believe they get the watches through Singapore. Will try to push for a better deal.

5159 should cost around rm320k. its a beautiful watch to own, one of the most beautiful per calender actually. This will be second PP i want to go for and the only watch will attract my eye balls now. However, in case you are not aware, resell value for this 5159 is not that high. You may be able to find it at around rm 200k pre owned if u are patient enough.

So I am not sure if you want to use your kid education fund to buy this. I will only use my spare cash to buy watch. I will be careful and check the used market before i make any decision. Some people here will tell you if you love it just buy it. I will make sure that i love it and wont suffer a big lose in case i wanna sell it later. Watch lunatic like me change mind quick. Trust me. Life is short and our desire is endless.  :Laughing_on_floor:

I always like the retrograde feature on a PP Perpetual but the leap year window keep on bugging me. I just hope they do it without eating into the date circle.

JOS

PM sent.

About retrograde hand, I will say thats inevitable. If the hand is not long enough, people will then complain about where the hand is pointing.  :Laughing_on_floor:

Arranging all the necessary details on a dial (relatively small if you talk about PP) is always challenging. PP likes to strike a balance of classic and yet relevant. So, thats extremely challenging when it comes perp calender. Indeed, most of the perp. calender which is below 40mm has that kind of 'messy' and readable issue. Even big dial such as 46 or 48mm big pilot perp calender also people complain about 'messiness'.

So if you comparing with a few other models of PP perp. calender, i will say 5159 is one of the most beautiful perp. calender made by PP. You know what I mean if you comparing this with 3940p, 5140 etc.  PP doesnt need everyone to like them. They do not really care really.  :Laughing_on_floor:

personally, i think this 5159 is the most beautiful and elegant perp. calender made by PP. of course that will be 5970 if one doesnt mind to have a chronograph.

I think the 5208 is much nicer.. or the 5207 if you don't mind a manual winding and don't want a chrono.

I think it is matter of personal taste. Just that if I'm spending this amount money on a watch. At least the watch should be as close to perfection as it should. I am just puzzle that why can't Patek move the the leap year windows lower or the retrograde ring higher so that the window does not "eat" into the ring on date from 15th ~ 17th. Was that really hard?

I mean they done it before

These are even smaller in size(36mm) than the 5159.

Maybe you're correct. Patek don't need people like me to buy they watch. There are hardcore PP collector out there that will just keep on buying and don't care if the watch ever get wear. I just can't one of them. :-[

However I think the position of Patek being ultimate high horology is drifting. Not that Patek can't make super watch anymore is just that they are more of a volume player now. Even with their current practice of stock control. 2x,000 watches a lot to move in a year. I don't expect to do what they did before in the good old days.  :P

Though I'm still hopeful that I can buy a new Patek in the future.

Very nice dial layout, though I would prefer not to have a moonphase.

Well, as I said, taste is very personal. It seems to me that our preference is very different. No offence, I presume that you must be born in 60s or 50s based on your choice of dial?

Leap year dial "issue" which you mentioned is not exclusively to 5159. It happened to some of their other models as well. Personally, It doesnt bother me at all because I concern more on the overall dial construction.

5159 has to be the one for me. More so after I was lucky to try one borrowed from a friend.

The dial is so beautiful and elegant and yet doesnt look old biscuit or messy at all.  ;D

Old biscuit? That's funny  :D

Is true taste is a personal thing. Have you had a chance to handle any black dial version of the retrograde perpetual. I never seen one in person so I'm curious in how they look.

I have yet to see any of the black retro p. calender in person myself too. But i am attending a PP GTG later this week and able to meet some serious collectors. Hope i am able to molest some PP min repeater.  :Laughing_on_floor:

Unless you really wanna to have a retrograde perpetual, i think 3940 is actually value for money. If one is patient enough, not too hard to source one at the pre owned market for PP per. calender 3940 for the price for a new 5712 1a.
