Based on looks I think the Portofino has the edge over the MUT, but to be honest both watches don't do much for me. The JLC movement however trumps the Portofino which houses a Sellita based movement.

How about topping up a bit for the MUT Moon? The moonphase complication makes the dial look way more interesting.

Personal preference - JLC MUT!! I saw resale value is one of the concern, then go for the safe and conventional rollie!

JLC of course,  a brand full of heritage and almost every single bit is homemade aka in house. The watch is a classic and its a beautiful piece. To me , the iwc is not even in the same league. For you info, i do own an IWC but not a JLC. I am still waiting the right time to pull the trigger to the right target.

Based on resale value alone, a preowned watch has already reflected of the resale value, and hence, lower downside vs a brand new piece

Not doubting JLC's pedigree but the MUT looks just..plain, almost bland. Noting wrong for a dress watch maybe just not the one for me.

Yep.  This.  Buy used and resale is a moot point.

If you feel that the MUT is plain, then I'd say go for the Portofino. You'd be staring at it everyday and you wouldn't want to regret looking at it after 2 weeks of wearing it.

The ETA based movement is still a GOOD movement. Easy to service and parts are easily available.

Resale is poor for both. Consider looking for a used one.

an added question,

is JLC MUT suitable for daily beaters? (Means generally at work every day?)

Depends on the type of work and attire. In a traditional office environment where suit + tie (or just a shirt for tropical climates), it would look fine. For a casual environment I'd go for something a bit more sporty.

I thought Portofino are no more ETA movement now?! Now is Selita movement rite?

To be honest, I'm not sure. Personally, I've yet to come across CONCRETE evidence that suggest it is either ETA or Sellita movement. IWC is tight lip about it.

In any case Sellita has been making parts for ETA movement and has its own version of 2892-A2 which is built from the same blueprint. Sellita has been supplying ETA with parts for many years.

If you're really particular about this, you may want to wait a little while more. IWC has already announced their own in-house caliber to replaced the current 30xxx caliber in all the entry level watches (portofino auto included).

But personally I won't hold my breath. It's good as it is already, be it ETA or Sellita.
